For the first time Junior members of Wrexham went down to Cardiff to take part in the Welsh Youth Team Foil. Teams are chosen at the event and without enough fencers for a Wrexham team they were integrated into other teams. Daniel Clays joined Matthew Williams and Poppy James to form Barbarians I and Eleanor Regnart-Butler joined Tirion-Haf Lloyd and Amy-Alethea Chapman-Parsons to form Lampeter/Wrexham. Barbarians I (shown Right: Daniel (Wrexham) Left; Matthew Williams (Cardiff) Center; Poppy James (Vale) Right) taking the Silver medal and Lampeter/Wrexham finishing fourth. It is with great sadness that Wrexham Fencing Club marks the passing of Mr Bob Turner on 19th Feb 2013, an acknowledged friend of fencing throughout Wales. He was a great servant of fencing being Chairman of Welsh Fencing, President of the Commonwealth Veterans Fencing Association and Founder member of Welsh and British Veterans Fencing. He was also an International Epeeist of renown, representing Wales at several levels. He will be greatly missed by many and our condolences go to his Family and Friends.
A memorial Service in celebration of the life of Bob Turner will be held at 2.30 pm on Sat 23rd March 2013 at Lisvane Memorial Hall, Heol y Delyn, Lisvane, Cardiff. CF14 0SQ.
Our Head Coach, Mike Norfolk wrote as follows:
BOB TURNER
My Friend, My Guide
When I started Wrexham Fencing Club over twenty years ago, Bob as Chairman of Welsh Fencing, guided us though the red tape, suggesting ideas. In addition, he assisted us regarding funding.
Some years later, Henry (Da Silver) asked if we could start up a Welsh Veterans Fencing Association. The nine Veterans in Wales agreed to this, after Peter Stewart organised two Veterans Welsh competitions.
The WVFA now has over 90 members, and Bob had been a committee member ever since its inception. As Veteran fencing grew throughout the world Bob represented Wales in Great Britain, Europe, the Commonwealth, and the World. He was President of the Commonwealth Veterans' Fencing Association, Chairman of Welsh Fencing and Chairman of Whitchurch Fencing Club.
Bob was a superb epeeist, and other friends who knew him as a young man will tell you of his skill.
We will all miss him so much.
Our deepest condolences to Vivian, Ben and the Family
Mike Norfolk MBE
Chairman WVFA
